Â鶹´«Ã½ Featured Partner: John P. Hussman Foundation

Featured August 2013

In 2011, the John P. Hussman Foundation generously pledged $1,500,000 to support the Mental Health Program in Liberia. Â鶹´«Ã½ is pleased to announce the completion of the challenge grant portion of this support. The Hussman Foundation's pledge consisted of an outright gift of $500,000 for fiscal year 2012, and a commitment to match donations to the program dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $500,000 per year for fiscal years 2013 and 2014. Thanks to the enthusiastic response of organizations, foundations, and individuals, the matching funds were raised in advance of the deadline. The challenge grant served to inspire others to join together in supporting the Mental Health Program in Liberia.

The Hussman Foundation strives to positively affect people's lives through programs that have a direct, measurable impact on their wellbeing. The organizations supported by the Hussman Foundation reach neglected populations that lack access to health and human rights. Research is an important component of their mission, including research that addresses autism, neurological disorders, diabetes, malaria, and cancer. In addition, the foundation focuses on direct assistance to those who are impoverished, particularly programs that can be a model for broader replication. The Hussman Foundation works to alleviate suffering or distress; fight disease; improve education for individuals with disabilities; build international refugee services; prevent homelessness; and provide emergency assistance to schools, health programs, and shelters.

The recent contribution of the Hussman Foundation to the Mental Health Program in Liberia has enabled the Center to work with the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by mental illnesses. The goals of the five-year program include creating a sustainable mental health work force through the training of physician assistants and nurses as Mental Health Clinicians. In August 2013, the Center will reach the milestone of graduating 100 Mental Health Clinicians who received approximately six months of specialized training and are providing mental health care in hospitals and clinics. In addition, the Center is working to reduce the stigma against persons with mental illnesses through positive messaging in radio, billboards, and drama skits. Family caregivers and patients are provided with accurate information about mental illnesses, connected to appropriate services, and helped to form community support groups.

Since 2007, the Hussman Foundation has been a key partner in the Center's efforts to fight disease and improve health among the most neglected communities in the world. Thanks to their support and other partners, the Center has been able to fight for the global eradication Guinea worm disease; provide long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets to control malaria; distribute medicines to prevent schistosomiasis in Nigeria; and train health workers to carry out trichiasis surgery in Niger and Sudan. Â鶹´«Ã½ is thankful for the continued generosity of the Hussman Foundation and their shared commitment to improving global health.
