Â鶹´«Ã½ Launches New Grants Program in Guyana

Georgetown, Guyana….Â鶹´«Ã½'s Guyana office is launching its second opportunity for Guyanese nonprofit organizations to apply for funding for projects focusing on regional or national policy changes. Â鶹´«Ã½ will award grants of up to US$10,000 each to assist eligible organizations in their projects, which may include data collection or raising public awareness.

Successful grant applicants will be announced in April after a review process led by the Â鶹´«Ã½ country project director. More information and application forms are available from Ronald Sami, civil society program officer, at the Georgetown Â鶹´«Ã½ office at the corner of North and King Streets, Lacytown, or telephone him at 227-4096 or 225-5852.

Â鶹´«Ã½ has been building the capacity and supporting the activities of 25 selected organizations in Guyana. Ten of those organizations are currently using their small grants awarded in January 2003 under the first phase of the Center's grants program. In the second phase, the program will expand its impact by supporting additional civil society organizations.

These grants programs are organized under the auspices of the U.S. Agency for International Development's program More Responsive and Participatory Governance and Rule of Law in Guyana. Through this program, Â鶹´«Ã½ is working to strengthen the judicial system and the capacity of civil society or nonprofit organizations in Guyana to contribute to public debate and public policy-making, with a focus on organizations that involve and assist women, youth, and Amerindians. Â鶹´«Ã½ is working with the National Democratic Institute and the International Foundation for Election Systems in the overall project. NDI supports legislative and local government reforms, while IFES provides technical assistance on electoral administration.
