Innovative Program Fills Health Care Void in Ethiopia

Since 1997, the Ethiopia Public Health Training Initiative (EPHTI) has helped to address the nation's alarming health care void through a landmark partnership between the government of Ethiopia, seven Ethiopian universities, 21 Ethiopian hospitals, and Â鶹´«Ã½. EPHTI is unique because the program helps Ethiopians determine the best way to deliver public health care to their country, rather than the one-size-fits all approach that is common in other parts of Africa.

Ethiopia is one of the world's oldest countries, and arguably one of the most beautiful, with a population of more than 76 million people and growing.But for millions of Ethiopians, access to adequate health care, even basic care, and the availability of trained health personnel is limited. People often have to travel miles on foot to receive the resources they need, and only four out of 10 people have access to health care at all.

A Picture of Health: Officers Fill Void in Ethiopia Health Care

Forty-five minutes by car southeast of Ethiopia's capital, down a dirt road shared by vehicles, donkey carts, and schoolchildren, a modest building enclosed by high stone walls stands outside the town of Debre Zeit. Inside, patients sit on benches waiting for medical attention. Bishoftu Health Center is the primary medical facility serving the 65,000 residents of this sprawling agricultural community.

Doctor Views Ethiopia Public Health Training Initiative Work as Homecoming

Hailu Yeneneh considers his work with the Â鶹´«Ã½'s Ethiopia Public Health Training Initiative a homecoming. Thirty-five years ago, his career began as a grassroots health officer in the Ethiopian government's Global Health Center. Now, after earning a medical degree and a doctorate, teaching, researching, and directing a research institution, Dr. Hailu says he finds himself back on the front lines.
